Nestled in the picturesque region of Veneto, Italy, Treviso is a bit of hidden gem that offers a charming blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It has a series of meandering canals, cobbled streets, and interesting architecture.
If you're planning a trip to Treviso, make sure to include some of these top five activities in your itinerary for an amazing time!
1. The Historic Centre.
Start your exploration of Treviso by taking a stroll through its historic centre. Lose yourself in a series of narrow streets, adorned with shops, beautiful palaces and ancient buildings. Marvel at the medieval city walls and the impressive Porta San Tomaso gate.
Don't miss the chance to visit Piazza dei Signori, the main square, where you can admire the grand Palazzo dei Trecento and the elegant Loggia Dei Cavalieri. Just round the corner you can see The Fontana delle Tette.. which apparently used to pour wine instead of water!
2. The Waterfront and Canals.
Treviso is often referred to as "Little Venice" due to its charming canals. You could take a romantic gondola ride along the Sile River and enjoy the scenic beauty of the city from a unique perspective. Or walk along the tranquil waterfront, lined with colourful houses and picturesque bridges, and stop for an aperitif by the waterfront.
Don't forget to visit the Pescheria, the historic fish market area, which is now a bustling hub of local gastronomy (although check the opening times before visiting!).
3. Treviso's Art and Museums.
If you’re an art enthusiasts you’ll be delighted by Treviso's rich cultural heritage. Visit the Casa dei Carraresi, a historic palace that houses temporary art exhibitions throughout the year.
Following this marvel at the stunning frescoes of the Cathedral of San Pietro and explore the Diocesan Museum complex, where you can admire a vast collection of religious art and artefacts.
The Luigi Bailo Museum is also worth a visit, showcasing contemporary art and design.
4. Sample Treviso’s Culinary Delights.
Treviso is renowned for its food, offering a range of delectable dishes and wines. Treat your taste buds to local specialties such as radicchio risotto, creamy tiramisu, and Prosecco, the famous sparkling wine produced in the region. Explore the city's traditional taverns and wine bars to experience the authentic flavours of Treviso. Don't forget to try the local Prosecco! Or better yet, during a wine tasting session in one of the nearby vineyards….
5. Escape to the Prosecco Hills.
Just a short drive from Treviso lies the Prosecco Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can embark on a scenic tour through the vineyard-dotted landscape, dotted with charming villages and historic wineries.
You could also visit a local vineyard for a guided tour, where you can learn about the production of Prosecco and enjoy a tasting session surrounded by stunning views. The Hills offer lots of picturesque walks, and you could do a spot of cycling.
We initially used Treviso as a stopping point from Airport to our next destination and were pleasantly surprised with how much to offer that we amended our itinerary so that we could have a final evening here before ending our trip.
We were lucky and managed to experience a local dancing competition in the city centre which was very heart-warming - take a look and see if any events are happening when you go!
