This was our 3 day itinerary for Trieste, but it can also be used for a weekend getaway! We visited mid-week during early September where the temperature was still very warm which allowed for a lot of late night eating and drinking outdoors.
Day 1 - Central Trieste (Outdoors).
1. Piazza Unita d'Italia.
Arrive in Trieste and start the day by getting a coffee at one of the largest sea-facing squares, the Piazaa Unita d'Italia. We'd recommend coming back to Harry's bar (on the square) for a cocktail with some great snacks!
2. Teatro Romano di Trieste.
Explore the main town, grab some lunch and shop, stopping by the Teatro Romano di Trieste before heading to the Giants Stairway.
After climbing up the stairs you'll get a nice view over the city of Trieste and see the Fontana Di Montuzza.
3. Castello di San Giusto.
Continuing on up you'll be able to see the Monumento ai Caduti di Trieste and then the Castello di San Giusto. You have to pay to enter but you can look around at all the historical weapons.
Afterwards head to Barakin San Giusto which is a few minutes from the Castello di San Guisto, it's a small bar which has a great view of the beach at the top of the hill.
4. Molo Audace.
Catch a break before you head back down into the city of Trieste to catch the sunset on the main pier, Molo Audace, before heading for dinner.
Our favourite place for food was in the main time, of course pizza! The restaurant Radici - it was really good value and the menu was so good. Although there are are plenty of bars to stop by for food, spritz'es or local wines.
Day 2 - Miramere.
1. Castello di Miramere.
In the morning get yourself a nice coffee and pastry before heading to the local train station.
Head to Castello di Miramere (only a short train ride away from Trieste train station), it is a beautiful castle which is built on a cliff overlooking the sea.
As you come out of Miramere station head towards the gardens, passing the Troll Berg down to the Porta della Bora (the coastline), before looping towards the main Miramere Castle.
You can enter the castle for a small charge and look around the collection of historic artefacts. Afterwards, we headed down to La Sfinge di Miramare where you can spot the fish and look back onto the castle and grounds, before looping around the coastline to Grotta dell'Arciduchessa Carlotta. If you're hungry there are a couple of cafes/restaurants along the docks if you fancy a bite to eat.
Head back through the Sequoia di Miramare gardens before catching the train back into Trieste for a relaxing late afternoon.
Day 3 - Central Trieste (Mostly Indoors).
1. Canale Grande.
Final day to soak up the sights of Trieste! Wander along the Canale Grande, for a coffee or breakfast. Not far from main canal there is a really nice coffee shop we found called Sircelli pasticceria e panetteria, and if busy the White Cafe is also next door.
2. Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyrido.
Adjacent to the cafes you can find the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyrido, a 18th Century Serbian Church. It is definitely worth visiting and observing the interior of the church as it's incredibly detailed.
Behind the church, there is another church, Church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo, which has a much larger appearance being built within the 19th Century.
Stroll along the main promenade for a final time, stopping at Salone degli Incanti, a large art exhibition which alternates it's exhibitions (worth checking in advance!).
3. Eataly.
Then continue down the coastline stopping by at Eataly for some local produce and souveniers. We flew to Trieste and had liquid restrictions, but you can still get 100ml of italien olive oil as a souvenier! There are small cafes/eateries within Eataly and is worth sitting down to sample some tasty food!
4. Revoltella Museum.
Final stop is to visit the Revoltella Museum, which has a fantastic experience and not just a classic art gallery! There is an amazing collection of late 19th century, in addition to more contemporary paintings and sculptures that can be found within the Museum.
After, if there's time head for dinner and another Aperol Spritz before ending the day or travelling onwards!
